Two Held Over Abduction Of Bayelsa Dep Govs Father

Security agents have arrested two suspects over the kidnap of Simon, the 75-year-old father of Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Peremobowei Ebebi, who was snatched from his home in Aleibiri on Monday.

The abductors are demanding millions of Naira as ransom for his release.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) denied involvement in the affair, but investigation showed that thugs used and dumped after the election may have carried out the act.

Officials of the Niger Delta Peace and Conflict Resolution Committee have established contacts with the captors in Ogodobiri, Delta State.

They are negotiating the freedom of Simon, who is said to be in a stable condition despite fears for his safety by his relations.

An eyewitness recounted on Monday that militants invaded the rural Aleibiri in four speed boats at 3 a.m., and fired gun shots to scare residents before abducting Simon, who is the towns paramount ruler. No casualty was recorded.

He was kidnapped despite the peace deal the state government signed with militants in Yenagoa last week.

Ebebis Chief Press Secretary, Ebimo Amungo, said it is the hand work of criminals who seek to sabotage the governments peace initiative.

To him, the kidnappers are not militants but criminals.

Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Secretary, Udengs Eradiri, condemned the act, saying it is unacceptable to the Ijaw.
