President Umaru Musa Yar�Adua yesterday said only credible elections will guarantee peace in the polity, adding that his administration remains fully committed to curbing electoral malpractices.
Yar�Adua said this while addressing a delegation from Kano State branch of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He said that the Federal Government will work with the National Electoral Reform Committee, political parties and other stakeholders to achieve this objective.
�The last local government elections in Kano State have shown us clearly that we must improve on elections in the country, or we shall not have peace. Electoral malpractices must become a thing of the past in our country, or peace and stability will continue to elude us,� he warned.
Kano State Chairman of PDP, Senator Masud Doguwa, commended Yar�Adua� for restoring rule of law and due process to the conduct of government business in Nigeria.
Speaking to State House Correspondents after the meeting, Doguwa said the mission of his delegation was to show solidarity and appreciation to the way Yar�Adua was handling the country�s affairs.
�We appreciate the way he is solving the problem of petroleum scarcity. His approach to security and labour issues, one will definitely know that what he is doing is good for this country. Everybody knows the position of Kano in terms of democracy and awareness. That is why we are at the State House to show solidarity with the president.�
�Hitherto, there was crisis in Kano PDP, but the problems have been solved. You can see Rimi and Kwankwaso are here, we have reconciled. It is even good for us to show ourselves to Mr President, so that he can know that Kano is now solid and back on track as we were in 1999.�
