IATA to inspect Lagos airport terminal

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) will today arrive the country carry out a safety audit on the Terminal Two of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos to verify the alleged claims that the new terminal falls below standard. The coming of the foreign body is expected to douse the tension created by a report on the level of safety of the new terminal which has not been substantiated by any relevant agency.

The audit by the IATA team, which is at the instance of the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Harold Demuren, would be done by the foreign body�s Regional Director in South Africa with the NCAA boss and other relevant agencies in attendance.

The decision to bring in IATA was reached at a reconciliation meeting held with the principal actors in the crisis by the house committee on aviation in Abuja last month .

According to the agreement reached,each of the actors were then directed by the house to submit its position on the issue to enable the house study and take a position.

The director-general of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Autho-rity[NCAA],Harold Demuren was said to have been told to invite IATA to come and inspect the new terminal to ascertain the level of safety at the new terminal.

The safety status of the new terminal became controversial following the position of Virgin Nigeria on why it could not relocate its local operations from the international wing of the Lagos airport to the local terminal.

The airline had laid claims to a report it quoted to have originated from IATA a report which has greatly put to test the status of the terminal.

Following the accusations and counter accusations from the airline and Bi-Courtney,owners of the new terminal,many stakeholders in the industry have become skeptical about the real status of the airport.
