Soldiers, LASTMA officials clash in Lagos

SEVERAL people were on Thursday severely injured and a lot of vehicles badly damaged as soldiers clashed with officials of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and policemen in Oshodi area of Lagos State while another set of people were injured at the Egbeda computer village on Wednesday night.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the fracas started when LASTMA officials stopped a bus conveying a soldier for flouting traffic rules.

The soldier reportedly orderded the LASTMA officials to let the vehicle go, but the LASTMA officials towed it to their office

The soldier reportedly returned with his colleagues who stormed Oshodi and attacked the LASTMA officials on duty in the area before the police intervened.

The soldiers reportedly turned the heat on policemen and the situation grew worse as policemen and soldiers clashed in a manner that threw the whole Oshodi into pandemonium.

The Oshodi incident was made more serious as it occurred around 4.00 p.m., when workers were returning home.

School pupils, traders and commuters scrambled for safety following the melee that ensued between the warring groups

Soldiers went on the rampage smashing windscreens of vehicles and kicking anyone in sight thereby causing injury to several people.

When the Nigerian Tribune visited the scene of the incident on Thursday, anti-riot policemen were on the ground to defuse the tension.

The spokesman of the state police command, Frank Mba, confirmed the incident but stated that normalcy had returned as the police in the state had met with Army authorities to find a lasting solution.
