The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control in Kebbi State has raised the alarm over the circulation of imported killer mosquito coils.
The state coordinator of NAFDAC, Mr. Fraden Bitrus, who alerted members of the public on the circulation of the coil, identified the product as Goldeer mosquito coil.
Bitrus also told the News Agency of Nigeria during an interview in Birnin-Kebbi on Monday that the coil was being smuggled into the country from a neighbouring country.
He added that NAFDAC officials had already seized more than 694 packets of the coil from various supermarkets in the state capital and the Birnin-Kebbi central market.
He warned members of the public against selling or buying the mosquito coil because the product was being illegally imported into the country.
He said, Apart from its illegal importation, it contained harmful chemicals.
The coordinator said while no single person had been apprehended over the sale and circulation of the harmful product, efforts had been intensified to trace the suppliers.
He said, Our preliminary investigation has indicated that this coil was being smuggled into Nigeria from Niger Republic and distributed to retailers at various market points, instantly.
On the activities of drug hawkers, Bitrus said the agency had so far confiscated drugs worth thousands of naira from 10 suspected hawkers.
He expressed delight that the number of such hawkers had decreased over the months in the state due to effective patrol by NAFDAC officials.
