Fuel Scarcity: Panic buying in Abuja

A good number of filling stations in Abuja and environs were at the weekend crowded by motorists who were panic buying for petrol, Daily Trust reports.

Most of the filling stations visited by our reporter were crowded by the motorists who were desperate to get the product. Some of the filling stations within the municipality had enough PMS to sell for consumers.

Speaking to Daily Trust last week in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, Dr. Oluwole Oluleye, said there was no course for alarm on the recent fuel queues that are building up in the country.

He said the queues are as a result of some hiccup in Lagos ports some weeks ago, which impact now reaches the people in the other parts of the country.

At the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Filling Station in Abuja, one of the pump attendant told our reporter yesterday that the queue started to build up since Saturday.

Both Total and Conoil filling stations opposite the NNPC corporate headquarters in Abuja also sell the product to motorists. Other filling stations visited by our reporter including Oando and Total filling stations at Berger dispose the product.

Reports from Kano said the fuel scarcity bites harder for about a week. A a litre of petrol over the weekend sold at about N250 per litre.

Daily Trust gathered that in Kaduna where the Refinery resumed operation just last week, the PMS sold at about N200 per litre over the weekend.

Daily Trust gathered that with all the three refineries in Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Warri producing PMS, the situation may likely ease in the country.
