Community lays siege to flow-station

Aggrieved community youths from Gbarain clan yesterday laid siege to the Etelebou flow station owned by the Anglo-Dutch oil, Shell Petroleum Development Company, disrupting operations in protest over alleged non implementation of memorandum of understanding by the oil company.

The protesting community youths, sources told Saturday Vanguard stormed the flow station in the early hours of Friday forcing the oil workers including the expatriates at the facility to run for their lives.

As a press time, the protesting youths are still occupying the oil installation vowing not to vacate the place until their demands are met.

No casualty was recorded as confirmed by the Police Public Relation Officer, Iniobong Ibokette (DSP) as workers were provided cover by the security operatives including the police attached to the station.
Although the police public relations officer could not give reason for the invasion but a source stated that it might not be unconnected with the issue of non implementation of Memorandum of Understanding, as the host communities had repeatedly complained about the insensitivity of the multinational oil giant to their plights.
The oil company was also accused of discriminating against the host communities in the area of employment.
