The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, said on Friday that the Federal Government has not received details of the alleged maltreatment of a Nigerian deportee on board the British Airways.
The deportee, Mr Ayo Omotade, was alleged to have been maltreated by the British Immigration, an act which prompted a protest among other Nigerians on board the flight. Maduekwe, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, said the ministry was currently in touch with the Nigerian Mission in the United Kingdom on the matter.
He said, We are yet to get official position from the UK government; we are also trying to get the fact from our mission in the UK and as soon as we are done, there will be an official statement on the issue. Maduekwe said that although the ministry had scanty information about the issue, there was need for Nigerians to be law abiding in their countries of residence.
He said, Under the citizens diplomacy, Nigerians, whether home or abroad, are expected to be focused and law abiding. If they position themselves as models of rule of law and accountability, this will go a long way in boosting our image positively in the global arena.
