Following recent incessant attacks on oil facilities and armed operations by pirates around the Bonny axis of Rivers state, the Federal government has authorised an increased deployment of military troops to raise security watch in the area.
This was as the state government called on the senior police officers undergoing the Intermediate Management Course of the Police Staff College Jos, to assist in proffering solutions to the Niger Delta crisis
Disclosing the deployment of more troops yesterday while receiving the management of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) at the Government House Port Harcourt, the state governor, Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, described recent events around Bonny Island, including the attack on the Divisional Police Station, in which five police personnel were killed, as signs of lack of adequate security.
He said government was committed to the safety of lives, property and investments in the area, noting that the state government was doing its best to reduce the security situation to its barest minimum.
While calling on corporate organisations in the state to partner with government in developing the Communities, Governor Amaechi urged the management of NLNG to see the need to go beyond what it was doing at the moment to make their operational area secure and peaceful for company/community harmony.
He tied economic difficulties in the Niger Delta to problems of food security and unemployment saying those who are working with us in the oil and gas sector must partner with us to provide security in the area.
