Pfizer may settle out of court

AS the legal battle between Kano State government and Pfizer Pharmaceutical Incorporation continued over Trovan test by the company which allegedly led to the death of many people, the two parties may have finally agreed to settle out of court.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Kano State, Mr. Aliyu Umar, told the court that there is move going on that the case be settled out of the court.

He told the court that the parties involved in the settlement deal would not want to reveal the details of the settlement pact in the court until it was desirable to do so.

The Kano High court presided over by Justice Shehu Atiku was told on Tuesday that the parties were presently meeting to settle out of court.

Speaking in the same vein, Chief Anthony Idigbe (SAN), lead counsel for Pfizer, told the court that the parties were negotiating for the settlement out of court under a conducive environment.

The discussion between the parties for now was confidential, he said, adding that it was being done under the best international practice in the settlement.

He told the court that the parties would sign a joint statement when we reach a deal. According to him, the out of court settlement must not be hostage settlement, must not be stampeded, but must be fair and just settlement that would be acceptable to both parties.
