MEN of the Lagos State Police Command are now at the crossroads on how to unravel the circumstances surrounding how a mentally imbalanced woman came about a bag containing the corpse of a baby boy.
The lady who gave her name as Tope Olajara had on Tuesday allegedly said that she had found the bag flung out of a moving car at Opebi, Ikeja area of the state.
The suspect told the police detectives at Alapere Police Station that she took the bag only to discover that it contained the strange object.
The suspect was said to have taken the bag and its content to the station where she complained hysterically about the bag containing the remains of the dead child.
Police detectives at the Homicide Section of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, where the lady was being detained, told Saturday Tribune that on interrogation, it was discovered that the suspect was incoherent.
We also discovered that she was not in a position to give the kind of evidence that the police were looking for. Initially, we thought that the insane lady gave birth to the baby and that she decided to kill it, but it was later found out that she had no sign of a nursing mother , said Leye Oyebade, DCP in charge of SCID.
The police boss said that further examination of the lady by police women revealed that her breasts were also flat. He said that they were already working on the angles which included taking the suspect to the Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, for medical examination to ascertain her actual state of mind.
And if it can be proved medically that Tope is actually a crazy woman, we may have no option other than to let her off the hook as none of her relations had shown up since she was detained, maintained Oyebade.
According to the DCP, the police had been responsible for her feeding in the last couple of days, adding that the remains of the dead boy had been deposited at Isolo General Hospitals mortuary for autopsy.
