Kidnapped Briton released

Kidnappers have released a British man seized in the Nigeria’s southern oil region, a military spokesman said.

Lt Col Sagir Musa said no ransom was paid to secure the Briton’s release on Saturday morning.

The man had been held captive since the middle of last month.

More than 200 foreign workers have been kidnapped in nearly three years of rising violence across the southern region. Hostages are normally released unharmed after a ransom is paid.

The violence has hit crude output in Africa’s biggest producer.

The identity of the released hostage was not immediately known.

UK authorities later confirmed the British man’s release.

Lt Col Musa said six Filipino seamen were taken by unidentified gunmen, only hours after the British man was released.

There is no indication of any link between the two incidents in the lawless region, an expanse the size of Scotland that is roamed by myriad criminal and militant groups who hide in the mangrove swamps and twisting creeks.
