EFCC set to try 10 ex-govs

TEN more ex-governors have been listed for trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged embezzlement of public funds, abuse of office, money laundering and conspiracy.

Already, 11 of those who served between 1999 and 2007 are being prosecuted by the commission for sundry alleged corrupt acts while in office.

The commission’s position on the 10 ex-governors was contained in a report submitted to the Senate Committee on Narcotics, Drugs and Financial Crimes.

A source in the Senate revealed to the Nigerian Tribune that the report was deliberated upon by the Senate committee and the commission last Tuesday, with the federal lawmakers said to have given express support.

Page 17 of the report which contained the information on the ex-governors read: “Another challenge that confronted the commission is in relation to the investigation of several former governors.

“The period coincided with electioneering and every step in the investigation process was fraught with blackmail even though the· facts were compelling and presented strong cases against those investigated.

“With the expiration in May 2007 of the constitutional immunity enjoyed by the former governors as provided by Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution, eight ex-governors were charged to court and are still standing trial in various courts.”
