Brutalised lady sues Navy, demands US$ 850,000 damage

Uzoma Okere, the lady brutalised Monday by armed naval ratings attached to Rear Admiral Harry Arogundade, has dragged the Nigerian Navy before a Lagos High Court, reports Saturday’s issue of the privately-owned Punch newspaper.

In an enforcement of fundamental human rights application filed before the court Friday by Mr. Olaniran Obele, the lady and another applicant, Mr. Abdullahi Abdu lazeez, joined Arogundade and Naval Ratings Unknown as co-respondents to the suit.

The applicants are also seeking 100 million naira (about US$ 850,000) damages from the respondents for the violation of their fundamental human rights.

A copy of the court process was made available to the newspaper here.

Okere is the daughter of retired Colonel Emmanuel Okere, who is the Sergeant-At Arms of the National Assembly.

She is asking the court to hold that the acts of the respondents in torturing, stripping her naked, ruthless brutalising and unlawfully arresting and detaining her without any justification are unlawful and unconstitutional.

The plaintiffs further urged the court to compel the respondents to issue unrese rved apologies to them for the violation of their fundamental human rights in at least four print and electronic media.

Okere is also seeking for an order of perpetual injunction restraining the respo ndents and their agents from horsewhipping motorists and putting them in apprehe n sion through reckless driving in siren-blaring convoy.

She further wants the court to declare that the respondents? prevention of using her Mitsubishi Colt car, marked MQ 34 KJA, on public roads amounts to discrimination, harassment and infringement on her right to freedom as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution.

Okere also asked the court to hold that she and other motorists were entitled to equal treatment and access to public roads without any discrimination.

She further wants the court to declare that the acts of intimidation, violence and reckless driving by the respondents on the public roads under the pretext of being military officers, violate her and other road users rights to movement and dignity of people.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the matter.
