Former Nigeria’s Vice President and national leader of the Action Congress, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has faulted the move by the Rivers State government to declare a death penalty for people found guilty of kidnapping in the state. Alhaji Abubakar, who stated this, while interacting with newsmen at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Friday argued that death sentence is not the best for the country.
“Kidnapping is not right; but, I do not believe in death sentence”, he stated. On the solution to the nation’s myriads of problems, the former Vice President described credible leadership as Nigeria’s greatest challenge. According to him, most of the people that led the country were actually not prepared for the positions, but were either lured to it, or got there by luck. “Our problem has always been leadership.
We had not had a leader that has offered himself and was ready for same. The records are there. President Obasanjo, we all know how he came in. Alhaji Shehu Shagari wanted to be a Senator and ended up being President, amongst others; he stressed. On the on-going reforms, the former Vice President acknowledged that the nation’s democracy needs fundamental reforms, while also advocating a jail term for fraudulent politicians.
Continuing, Alhaji Abubakar expressed satisfaction with the performance of the leadership of Action Congress in Rivers State, while also commending the media for what he described as their good works in the state. Alhaji Abubakar, who came into Port Harcourt, after paying a condolence visit to former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyesegha, over the demise of his mother, came in company of former governor of Adamawa State, Alhaji Bonny Haruna, among others. Earlier in his speech, the leader of the Action Congress in the state, Prince Tonye Princewill expressed happiness over the National leader’s visit and described him as a reliable and visionary leader. It would be recalled that it is the second time the former vice president is visiting the state in three months.
