Two days of clashes between rival cults in Edo state have left at least eight people dead, Nigerian police confirmed on Thursday.
“At least eight people died in the violence,” Edo police spokesman Peter Ogboi told AFP.
Local media said 15 people, mostly students of the University of Benin and Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma had been killed in the clashes which broke out between two rival student gangs on Monday and Tuesday.
However Ogboi said those involved in the clashes were not students but “street cult members”, adding that police reinforcements had been deployed to contain the violence.
