Nigeria, Russia sign nuclear power pact

Russia and Nigeria have signed an agreement on nuclear energy, allowing the two countries to work together on mining uranium, building and testing atomic power plants and sharing knowledge.

The agreement may also help Nigeria develop nuclear energy research and generation, Russian state-run nuclear holding company Rosatom Corp. said in a statement emailed to Bloomberg yesterday.

The deal is coming as Nigeria channels huge resources towards solving its perennial power crisis. The agreement could also lead to cooperation in uranium prospecting and the development of uranium deposits in the country.

Bloomberg did not give additional details on the deal between the two countries.

Officials at the Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) refused to comment on the nuclear deal with Russia when contacted yesterday, as they said the Director General of Russia and Nigeria have
