Yar’Adua appoints new police chief

Nigeria’s President Umaru Yar’Adua has appointed Mr. Ogb onaya Onovo as the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), pending his confirmation by the appropriate authorities, the presidency said in a statement Thursday.

Onovo, until his appointment a Deputy Inspector General of Police, takes over from retiring Mike Okiro with effect from 24 July 2009.

The new IGP, 56, graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in the country’s South-east in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science and began his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police on 1 August, 1977.

He rose through the ranks to become a Deputy Inspector General of Police on 14 March 2002 and has held several career positions in the Police.

Mr. Onovo was also the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) between 1998 and 2000.
