Former governor accused of graft

The Nigerian authorities on Wednesday charged a former state governor with stealing $100-million of public funds, the country’s anti-corruption agency said.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought 149 graft charges against the ex-governor of the central state of Nasarawa, Abdullahi Adamu, and 18 others, including some of his close aides.

They were accused of “looting the state treasury” to the tune of 15 billion naira ($100-million) during Adamu’s tenure from 1999 to 2007.

The judge at the federal high court in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa, granted the defendants bail and adjourned the case to March 15.

The EFCC is investigating graft charges against dozens of state governors in power between 1999 and 2007.

Wednesday’s hearing came after a court on Monday ordered the re-arrest of another former state governor over corruption charges.
