GLJ likely to name new vice-president Tuesday

With the assumption of office of Nigeria’s new President Goodluck Jonathan within hours of the death of his predecessor Umaru Yar’Adua, speculation is rife here on who will become the country’s next vice-president.

The president may announce his likely deputy tomorrow and take the name to the Parliament for approval, sources said.

According to them, the present secretary to the government Yayale Ahmed who acted as the orator during the inauguration of the president may be elevated to the position.

Nuhu Ribadu and Nasir El-Rufai are the other top contenders for the coveted position.

Ribadu was the chairman of the anti-corruption police, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and El-Rufai was the minister of federal capital territory under former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.

However, other political big-wigs are being mentioned as possible candidates including a cousin of late President Yar?Adua who is at present, a minister, Murtala Yar?Adua.
