Gunmen struck again in Port Harcourt in the early hours of yesterday and felled the head of the State Civil Commission, Chief Anthony Egobueze in his Mgbuoshimiri residence before policemen whom he made distress call to could respond.
Rivers State Government described the incident as shocking and saddening, adding that it was a great loss that would be too difficult to replace.The position of the state government was expressed by the Commissioner for Information, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari who prayed God to give the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
The gunmen were alleged to have gained entry into his fortified house around 3 a.m and killed him, destroying his vital organs.
Confirming the incident, Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Rita Abbey assured that they were already on the trail of the people who carried out the distardadly act.
Some relations of the deceased who did not want their names mentioned alleged that it was more of an assassination than any other thing as the attackers went straight for his life.
A text message from Abbey reads: “Today, 11/06/10, at about 0300hours, Rumukpakani police was asked by the control room to attend to a distress call near Deeper Life Church, Mgbuoshimini.
“Before the police arrived the scene, hoodlums had already shot dead Chief Anthony Egobueze and escaped. He was the chairman, Rivers State Civil Service Commission. No arrest has been made , but investigation is in progress,” she said.
