Local government distributes 2,000 goats

Gwale Local Government Area in Kano State has distributed 2,000 goats to indigent people, as part of its efforts to alleviate poverty in the area.

The council Chairman, Abbas Sani, disclosed this at Gwale on Friday during a community session organised by the Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED). He said that the goats were purchased at the cost of N14 million and were shared among 400 people across the local government area.

According to him, each beneficiary got five goats, one male and four females, pointing out that the gesture would boost animal production and reduce poverty among the people.

Mr Sani, who was answering questions from people at the forum, however, complained about the destruction of the local government’s secretariat by political thugs during the local government elections in the state in 2007. The destruction, he said, resulted in the loss of property worth millions of naira, including official documents and cash.

Earlier, the Executive Director of CHRICED, Zikirullah Ibrahim, said that the session was aimed at fostering accountability and good governance in local government administration. Through the forum, he added, elected local government officials would be able to answer questions from people who voted them into office “and this will enhance democracy at the grass roots”.
