| THE 2010 Ibrahim Index, on Monday, ranked Nigeria 43rd in governance performance, in a survey involving 53 countries on the continent.
The index also ranked Nigeria 13th out of 16 countries in West Africa. According to the index, published by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, an organisation committed to supporting good governance and great leadership in Africa, Nigeria scored 43 for governance quality in 2008/09 and was ranked 40th. The country, however, scored lower than the regional average for West Africa, which was 50, as well as the continental average put at 49. At sub-category level, Nigeria’s highest rank was in public management and lowest in personal safety. The country scored 36 in accountability and corruption and was ranked 34th, while it ranked 42nd in national security. While commenting on the assessment, Mo Ibrahim, founder and chairman of the foundation, said, “the 2010 Ibrahim Index gives us a mixed picture about recent progress on governance across the continent.” |
