Security beefed up around Lagos Airport

FOLLOWING the bomb blasts that rocked Abuja during the 50th independence anniversary celebration on Friday, security around the Murtala Muhammed Interna-tional Airport, Lagos, has experienced an upward review.
Police personnel from Mobile and Anti-bomb units drafted to the two roads, leading to the international wing of the airports, screened every vehicle, passenger and worker going to the international terminal building.
The policemen, numbering about 20, were seen screening every vehicle with bomb detectors, while people and their luggage were also screened with metal and explosive detector.
Also, the commandant of air defence was seen around the Presidential Wing of the airport, giving orders to the security personnel on guard to ensure that vehicles without the Presidential Wing parking stickers were not allowed to park within the car park, while owners of vehicles without the stickers who had been allowed by the security personnel to park based on personal recognition, were asked to remove them immediately.
Speaking on the development, Media Assistant to the Director-General of Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Mr. Sam Adurogboye, said the issue of security in the aviation industry is an ongoing one, and is never discussed openly.
He, however, said that the presence of mobile police and anti-bomb squads in the airport was just one of the measures put in place to boost security in the recent times.
Adurogboye, who said safety and security is a daily concern in the aviation industry, added that airlines in conjunction with other stakeholders in the industry, meet regularly to compare notes on security issues around the airports.
He said apart from the policemen who are visible to the people, other security agents are working under cover, monitoring the situation, not only in the Lagos airport but in every airport across the nation.
