FIFTY years after the British colonial masters left Nigeria, some of their misadventures in the country have again been brought to the fore.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday accused Britain of instituting the endemic rigging culture in the nation’s electoral system.
The Anambra Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Professor Chukwuemeka Onukogu, made the scathing remark in Awka, the Anambra State Capital, at a forum organised by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for journalists .
He said the whole saga of election rigging began in 1959 when the colonial masters organised the first general election in the country, which he said the British rigged to favour a certain political party.
Onukogu, therefore, advocated the adoption of what he called home-grown democracy for the country which he said would have the full colour of our indigenous politics.
He vouched for his commission’s readiness to produce a credible voter’s register which he said was sine qua non to a credible poll.
