cops return columnist’s passports

A newspaper columnist who had his passports taken by Nigeria’s secret police says they have been returned.

Okey Ndibe told The Associated Press on Monday that an official with the State Security Service gave back his passports during a meeting.

Ndibe said the official described the passport seizure as “just one of those things”, and promised the columnist would not face further trouble.

Ndibe is a US citizen who teaches at Trinity College in Connecticut. He also writes a weekly column on politics for The Sun newspaper.

He said he was detained at Lagos’ international airport on Saturday night.

Ndibe said he believed his brief detention and the passport seizures came from the government’s displeasure over his articles.
