The United States of America (USA) has expressed optimism that the April polls would reflect the yearnings and wishes of all Nigerians. The US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Terence McCulley, made this known when he visited the Senate President, Senator David Mark, in Abuja, saying that he had assessed the country’s preparation for the elections and the enthusiasm towards the success of the polls.
According to him, “With what I have seen so far on the part of the politicians, the civil societies, the government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), I am optimistic that the outcome of the elections would reflect the wishes of all Nigerians.”
He counselled that the process leading to the elections should be free and credible, devoid of any hindrance.
He, therefore, urged the government and all relevant authorities to strengthen security network so that no Nigerian would be denied his or her right to exercise his or her franchise.
As a friend of Nigeria, he promised that the American government would assist the country in the conduct of free and credible polls, adding that, “We are watching with keen interest and high expectation that Nigeria will get it right this time round. We shall cooperate and assist in this process.”
