Agency insists that oil company pay for clean-up

A Vanguard report states that the Nigerian National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (Nosdra) has taken the Pipelines and Product Marketing Company Limited (PPMC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), to the Federal High Court in Asaba, Delta state, for refusing to pay a R47 358 defaulting sanction.

The PPMC maintains NNPC pipelines as well marketing petroleum products in Nigeria. PPMC owns the J S Amazing, an oil vessel that capsized in Ijala in 2009, polluting the Warri River, and affecting several coastal communities. Nosdra states that the PPMC has ignored numerous instructions to organise a clean-up of the river. Consequently, Nosdra has had to levy a monetary sanction on the PPMC, which has not yet been paid. The matter was adjourned to 15 March.
