Blast kills one in Kaduna

An explosive device went off as two men sought to move it to another location in a northern Nigerian city, killing one of them and wounding the other in an incident ahead of elections, police said Friday.

The men were trying to move the device from an uncompleted building in a suburb of the city of Kaduna when one went off late on Thursday, police spokesperson Aminu Lawan told AFP. Three other explosive devices were found inside the building.

Both men were taken to hospital, where one died, he said.

“We still don’t know who the suspects were, where the explosives were meant to be planted and for what motive,” Lawan said.

He said two other suspects in connection with the explosion had been arrested while the police were waiting for the injured man to regain consciousness to question him.

Nigeria has seen several bomb attacks in the run up to this month’s elections.

Legislative elections are set for Saturday after two postponements because of organisational problems, while the presidential vote is now April 16 and state governorship ballots will be held on April 26.
