Families of poll volunteers killed in riots to receive more than $30,000

Nigeria’s president has announced that the families of slain young poll workers will each receive more than $30,000.

President Goodluck Jonathan said in a statement Tuesday that he wanted to show gratitude to the college graduates who had paid “the supreme sacrifice.”

Authorities have said that 10 volunteers died in violence that swept through northern Nigeria after an April 16 vote extended the president’s mandate by four years.

Most were killed by angry mobs who attacked their lodges after they had been monitoring polling stations.

Jonathan said a committee would investigate the riots that mired polls described by international observers as the cleanest since Nigeria became a democracy in 1999.
