The Nigeria police announced Monday they had rescued the five members of the country’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who were kidnapped in southern Rivers state 7 June. Police Commissioner Suleiman Abba said the corpers were ‘sighted and rescued by mobile policemen conducting stop and search at Omerenu along the Port Harcourt-Owerri road’ in southern Nigeria Sunday evening. He said the corpers were in ‘good state of health’ and had been handed over to the Director-General of the NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Tsiga.
One of the kidnappers was arrested, Suleiman said.
The corpers, who include one male and four females – were identified as Yusuf Olumide, Faseye Funmilayo, Chinonye Ejiogu, Vivian Ekwuanya and Nkechi.
They were abducted at Odomanya in Ikwerre local government of Rivers state while returning from a community development assignment.
Last September, five corps members were also kidnapped in the state, but later rescued by soldiers.
