About 90 followers of the Shiite sect and the sect’s Governor-General, Kasimu Rinin-Tawaye were yesterday arrested in Sokoto State in connection with the assassination of prominent cleric, Sheikh Umaru Hamza Dan Maishiyya on Thursday.
The men were said to have been arrested at the sect’s headquarters at Kanwuri area of the state after a tedious duel with the security operatives drafted to arrest them.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Shehu Othman confirmed the arrest of the Shiite leader and 90 followers, adding that the police have been conducting investigations to unravel the cause of the murder.
He warned people against taking laws into their hands, assuring that the police is making strenuous efforts to bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to justice.
Meanwhile, mobile policemen and the army were were patrolling various parts of the metropolis to guarantee peace in the state. Similarly, the Friday (Jumaat) prayer was conducted amid tight security at Shehu Danfodio mosque and other places.
