260 Nigerians Died April 14, Says Amnesty International

THE Nigerian Chapter of Amnesty International yesterday provided an insight into the level of destruction that trailed the April 14 governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections.

According to the rights body, more than 260 persons were killed in several parts of the country during the exercise.

Another 330 sustained various degrees of injuries while 15 cases of disappearances of persons were equally recorded, stated.

In a statement yesterday in Lagos, the group’s National Chairperson, Mr. Peter Ajayi, said that beside the killings, 21 private and public buildings, including police stations, INEC offices and party secretariats were torched by rioters.

To prevent a repeat of the violence tomorrow, the group asked security agencies to be neutral as the presidential and National Assembly elections hold today.

The rights body expressed worry that the worsening security in Nigeria could degenerate into anarchy thereby robbing the elections of legitimacy.

It therefore appealed to the Federal Government to improve on the security situation in the country by dismantling all political barriers deliberately created to stall stability.

Meanwhile, the Centre for Human Rights Education and Reporting (CHRER) has urged the government to investigate the causes of the violence that characterised the conduct of the state elections with a view to bringing the perpetrators to justice.

A statement signed by its Director of Programmes, Bola Olanrewaju, urged the government to improve on the security situation in the country.
