A 17-year-old girl, Blessing John, has sold her two-week-old baby girl for 20,000 naira (US$128) because she could not cater for her, Nigeria’s local Leadership newspaper reported Sunday.
The paper quoted police spokesman in northern Niger State, Mr. Richard Oguche, as saying Blessing, who is a high school student, sold the baby to one Mrs. Chikodili Jude, in the state capital, Minna.
The police have arrested the mother of the child and the child’s buyer, as well as Blessing’s guardian, Mrs. Martha Obino, who negotiated the sale of the baby.
Mr. Oguche said the police would commence further investigation to unearth the circumstances surrounding the sale of the baby and also charge those found to have run foul of the law to court.
