Obama congratulates President-elect Buhari

President Barack Obama is congratulating the president-elect of Nigeria, saying the election there has “shown the world the strength” of the African country’s commitment to Democratic ideals.

Obama says in a White House statement Wednesday that he was impressed with how Nigerians “came together to decide the future of their country peacefully.”

President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat to former military dictator Muhammadu Buhari. His address to the nation opened the way for a peaceful and unprecedented transition of power in Africa’s richest and most populous state.

Obama said he wanted to commend both men for “their public commitments to non-violence throughout the campaign.”

Buhari said in his acceptance speech that now is the time “to heal wounds” after a hard-fought contest left people emotionally drained.
