The implementation of Nigeria’s nuclear power programme has reached the first of three milestones in line with the International Atomic Energy Agency approach.
As such, the country is now ready to undertake the significant work necessary to prepare for ordering for the first nuclear power plant.
A representative of the Director-General, International Atomic Energy Agency, Dr. Vincent Nkong-Njock, stated this at the official presentation of Nigeria’s strategic plan for the implementation of the national nuclear power programme.
According to him, Nigeria’s nuclear power programme is progressing well and the country has established the basic infrastructure.
The IAEA chief charged Nigeria to continue its efforts at improving the coordination and supervision of nuclear power introduction activities at the national level.
In his keynote address, the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, warned the executive arm of government to ensure that the project was not abandoned at some point.
He said, “My experience is that we start a very good project, we put down some little money, the next time there is no money again and one government official comes and says that this is not important. It is better for us not to start the exercise at all if we are not going to fund it properly.”
