| Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Dimeji Bankole has revealed how three former ministers frustrated the country’s access to $14 billion investment in infrastructural development.
Bankole vowed that the three former ministers whom he did not mention would never hold a public office in Nigeria again for blocking the country’s access to the investment which he said would have made the difference in provision of infrastructures in the country. The speaker explained that the unnamed ministers after meetings with a foreign consortium that wanted to finance infratuctural development in the country blocked the signing of the necessary agreement between the federal government and the consortium thus frustrating the access to the investment. “There was a consortium that came to Nigeria last year. They all own banks … and have already facilitated meeting with three ministers in infrastructure and land ministries and the rest of them. Between the three ministries Nigeria is to spend about 75 percent of the capital project and after the meeting with the President, they were to sign a legal framework to see how they could have access to this fund from the consortium”. The Speaker who spoke at a dialogue between the House of Representatives and financial sector in Abuja explained. He added: “They are to bring $14 billion and to show faith that they were ready to block-off $1 billion for the government even before any transaction takes place between those ministries and the consortium. “However, from the date of the meeting with the ministries till last week its about eight months there was no movement, none whatsoever, in fact the three ministries totally discouraged us from having access to this fund which is being offered without interest to build Nigerian infrastructure. “I don’t understand that, I don’t know if you understand it and as simple and basic is that. Well I made bold to say that those ministers are no longer manning the ministries or are they in government anymore.” |
