Curfew relaxed in jos after violence

The government of Nigeria’s northern Plateau State Wednesday shortened the curfew period imposed on the capital city, Jos, from 24 to 17 hours, after the sectarian violence, which began Sunday, seemed to have been curtailed.

The curfew will now be effective from 5pm to 10 am the following day.

The violence left deaths, injuries and destruction in its trail.

At the start of the violence on Sunday, the government promptly imposed a 12-hour curfew but this was first increased to 24 hours Tuesday before being reduced to 17 hours Wednesday.

Reports say that the curfew had generated a food crisis as shops ran dry of essential food items and the curfew prevented residents from venturing out in search of food.

The Nigerian federal government has deployed hundreds of soldiers to support the police in quelling the violence, which has left hundreds dead and injured and displaced 4,000.
