Boko Haram is Third Deadliest Terror Group in the World

Despite the recent successes recorded by the military forces of Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon against members of the Boko Haram sect, the terror group based in North East Nigeria has been listed among the top five terrorists groups in the world.

According to a report released by the Cable News Network (CNN) on Monday in the US, Boko Haram was named the third most dangerous terrorist group in the world ahead of ISIS and the Taliban.
According to the report released by CNN, Al- Shabaab, A Somali-based terror group with links to al Qaeda, has made the most headlines this month followed by Al Qaeda, an extremist group with branches in the Middle East and Africa.

Boko Haram places third on the list closely followed by ISIS and the Taliban.

Boko Haram according to findings was established in 2002 as a religious group by its founder and first leader, Mohammed Yusuf. The death of Yusuf in 2009 gave birth to a wave of terror attacks against the Nigerian state which has continued till date.

Under its new leader, Abubakar Shekau, the group has carried out many attacks in churches, schools, army barracks, markets, the United Nations building in Abuja, Police Headquarters in Abuja among others leading to the death of over 15,000 persons till date.

Boko Haram however gained the attention of the world after its members successfully abducted 276 girls from the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno state.

The decision of the federal government to institute a state of emergency rule in the North East states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states has had little or no effect in the fight against the sect but the recent collaboration of the military forces of neighbouring countries like Chad, Niger and Cameroon has seen the war against the sect enter a new level with the combined forces recording a great deal of success against the sect in recent times.
