American woman kidnapped in Nigeria

A Seattle missionary and Seattle Pacific University alumna was kidnapped in Nigeria Monday morning.

Rev. Phyllis Sortor has been working there for about 10 years.  The veteran Free Methodist was taken by a group of people near the academy where she taught.

“[It’s] surreal, just surreal,” said Sortor’s stepson Richard, at a prayer service Monday night.  “I just can’t believe this.”

The State Department and FBI and working to find Sortor and rescue her.

“They’re over there doing good for other people and this happens,” said her confounded stepson.

In one of Sortor’s latest updates online there was no sign of distress.  She came across upbeat, writing: “Just a little note to share the joy with you regarding the (long-awaited) opening of our brand-new (International Child Care Ministries) school in Enugu!”

We will update when we have more information.
