President Olusegun Oba-sanjo yesterday morning directed the Nigerian Police and all other security agencies to clampdown heavily on anybody who may want to disrupt the conduct of this month’s general elections.
In a message to Nigerians on the occasion of this years Easter celebration, the President stated that his administration had taken the full responsibility of providing a peaceful atmosphere for the conduct of the elections.
He therefore warned that any attempt by anybody or group to create confusion or chaos before, during and after the general election would be matched with force.
He said: Let me seize this opportunity to warn once again that the Federal Government takes its responsibility of providing an enabling atmosphere for peaceful elections and an orderly transition very seriously.
“The Nigerian Police and all other security agencies have therefore been placed on full alert to clampdown heavily on any persons who engage in actions that threaten our collective desire for trouble-free elections in the coming days.
The President allayed the fears and doubts about INECs preparedness for the elections which have been sown in the minds of some of our people by apostles of negativism.”
On the Easter celebration, the President said for Christians all over the world, the major significance of Easter, which commemorates the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ our Saviour, is to be found in its message of hope, forgiveness of sins, rejuvenation and the promise of eternal life for all true believers”.
Also yesterday in Abeokuta, President Obasanjo disclosed that there were mounting pressures from some people on his administration to loot the nations treasury. He however said such pressures were rebuffed leading to the reserves in the treasury at present.
