PHCN to Probe Cause of Fire Incident

The Eko Distribution Zone of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in Lagos has commenced investigation into the cause of the fire outbreak which occurred in the company on Monday.

To this end, officials of the Safety Department of the PHCN in Abuja arrived in Lagos yesterday to liaise with their colleagues in the safety department of the zone.

Principal Manager Public Affairs of the zone Mr. Godwin Sule Idemudia disclosed this to Daily Trust in an interview in Lagos on Wednesday.

He said structural engineers from PHCN headquarters in Abuja arrived in Lagos yesterday to look into the extent of the damage done to the 15 storey building by the inferno with a view to determining whether the staff can move into it.

“They are here to determine whether we can move into the building because work cannot just stop like that. They would come up with their findings before the end of today,” Idemudia said. He thanked God that the inferno did not claim any life.

Meanwhile, workers of the company were idle yesterday when our correspondent visited the office in the early hours of the day. Although some policemen cordoned off the place against the incursion of area boys, some of the workers still discussed the incident in lone tones.

Fire had on Monday gutted the fifth and sixth floors of the PHCN building in Lagos. The cause of the inferno was unknown, according to the Principal Manager Public Affairs of the zone Mr. Godwin Sule Idemudia.

But a source told our correspondent that the fire was caused as a result of sparks from a moribund elevator which used to lift people from the ground floor to the last floor of the 15th storey building.
