The Federal Government has said with judicious use of resources allocated to the troubled Niger Delta and support of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), it expects that peace would fully return to the region in the next six months.
Vice President Goodluck Jonathan said this while receiving a 10-man delegation from Action-Aid, led by its Country Director, Dr Otive Igbuzor, at the State House yesterday.
He assured that the on-going dialogue with various communities in the Niger Delta to seek lasting peace would not be limited to the ethnic communities, but will involve all stakeholders to ensure that it endures.
Our attempts to resolve the problems would benefit not only Nigerians, but other countries that depend on our oil. Hence, our proposed enlarged dialogue on the Niger Delta problems should not be limited to the people of the Niger Delta, because anything that happens there has a global effect and if our discussions are limited to the Niger Delta people, it may not achieve much. All key stakeholders in the region must be involved in these discussions.
He said President Umaru Musa YarAdua has been holding consultations with various groups in the Niger Delta, to restore lasting peace, adding that with his commitment to judicious use of resources allocated to the area and support of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), government expects that peace would fully return in the next six months.
