Inspector General of Police (IG), Mike Okiro, on Thursday held a closed doors meeting with German Ambassador to Nigeria, Joachim Schmillen, to discuss issues relating to the threat issued by Niger Delta militant group, Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND), to the construction firm, Julius Berger.
The group had earlier this week ordered the company out of the country, with a deadline of next Monday.
Okiro, during his visit to the German Embassy in continuation of his tour of all embassies in Nigeria, assured the envoy of continuous provision of adequate security for himself and all his staff.
The envoy, in his welcome address, however, wondered why the news of insecurity in Nigeria has continued to make headlines as he disclosed that his personal experiences show that the nation is quite safe.
He said he has traversed virtually all states in Nigeria without coming to harm.
He stated that though, it may sound unbelievable, on most of his trips across Nigeria, he drove the car himself without any police escort, and that at no time was he molested or harassed by anyone.
He assured the IG, who sought to know any security problem the embassy might be encountering to enable him intervene, that he has no problem whatsoever.
Schmillen, however, declined to comment on the threat issued by MEND, when pressed by newsmen to do so, but admitted that the company actually brought the issue to his notice.
