Port Harcourt Sports - port harcourt golf club
Forces Avenue
Old GRA
Adjacent to the Olympia Hotel
Port Harcourt Golf Club is a section of Port Harcourt Club (1928).
The course has been in existence since the early 1930’s and was originally a 13 hole course, but by 1989 the course was extended to a full 18 holes with a length of just over 6000 yards and a course par of 70. Major improvements have been made to the club house over the years and the current projects include refurbishing the upstairs bar and the car park.
Due to the conversion to an eighteen hole layout the course is quite challenging. This is because it tends to be quite tight and requires accuracy off the tee box, additionally the course is also quite heavily wooded and out of bounds comes into play on a number of holes. There are three par 5’s ten par fours and 5 par threes. Stroke index one is the 480 yard ’par four Long Straight’ and water comes into play on the 197 yard par three “Creek’
One feature that might be unusual to a first time visitor is that the putting surface are called ‘browns’, this is due to the fact that the ‘browns’ constructed of oiled sand and these require a ‘sweeper’ to remove foot prints, putting lines etc.
There is now a Greens Committee in place who is actively planning to convert the browns to regulation greens. Any company or individual who wishes to sponsor or donate to this effort should contact the Greens Committee Chairman at the club.
Tournaments and competitions are held regularly with the weekly mainstays being the Sunday 18 hole ‘Kitty’ (Tee off 9am to 2pm) and the Thursday 9 hole ‘Kitty’.(Tee off 3pm to 4.30pm)
Visitors are always welcome and the current green fee is N1000 for eighteen holes. The standard caddy fee is N200 for a round but most members add a tip to bring the fee up to a maximum N500.
Correct golfing attire is required. (i.e. no jeans or shirts without collars or dress shirts)
Those wishing to join as members are required to first join the Main Port Harcourt Club and then they can subscribe to the golf section.
The course is located on Forces Avenue, Old GRA, adjacent to the old Olympia Hotel.
