Port Harcourt Hotels - clocktower hotel

8 Graceland Avenue,
Tombia Extension,
G.R.A. Phase II, Port Harcourt

Larry The Canuck had some very strong words to say when reviewing this place for us. read on to share his thoughts...

Unless you really have to, DON’T bother staying here. Go somewhere else. I had the misfortune of working for a chintzy contractor and was put up in this hotel for over a month and a half.

The hotel itself is adequate however it is expensive for what you get. Although it tries to call itself a Three (3) Star Hotel, it must be a local standard being applied since it falls short of meeting any European or North American standards.

The rooms are acceptable however it is to the Third World standard of amenities. The housekeeping staff tries very hard to keep the place up and they do a good job. This is the best part of the hotel. It goes downhill from here.

There is a pool and patio area and outside bar. The bar is OK, however they insist of playing taped music most evenings at full volume. This is so loud that a television at full blast cannot be heard in the rooms. Usually this music is played far into the night and on one Sunday this continued until 5:00 AM the next morning. Don’t expect a quiet night’s sleep.

FOOD SERVICE.

DON’T EAT HERE. I had a case of food poisoning from the poor food. The food is expensive and low quality. Extremely small servings portions are given, which they called using “Portion Control” when I complained and had sent things back. It is more like “Portion Rip Off”. I was charged 2400 Naira for a few pieces of extra meat and rice one evening. What I got for a double portion consisted of about 11 small ¼ inch cube pieces of mystery meat and some kind of sauce in the bottom of a cereal bowl. The food is usually cold by the time you get it both in the restaurant and via room service. Table service in the restaurant is almost non-existent. Very rarely did what I ordered and what I got matched. We asked for ‘French Fries’ one evening and were served a plate of ‘French Rice’ ( ? ) instead. The serving girls can barely speak English. I have sent back meals delivered by room service four times as the food was not acceptable enough to eat. They are totally put out and argumentative when you sent their slop back and refuse to sign the chit to charge it to the room. Unfortunately there is no other restaurant in the area to go to. Instead of having to eat what this hotel tries to fob off on you it is worth it to take a taxi to Cheers or Toby Jug for a real meal instead. Cost wise for taxis and a proper meal you would break even. For the same price that the Clock Tower charges for their fare, the Toby Jug will give you four beautiful slices of roast beef, mashed potatoes, two vegetables, two large Yorkshire Puddings, gravy and a large portion of Bread Dressing/Stuffing. That beats a ¼ full bowl of sloppy mystery meat and a plate of cold rice any day.

Finally after weeks of this I asked for the Hotel Manager to come to my room to discuss the poor service and the low quality of the food. When he eventually arrived after two weeks of asking for him, all I got was a surly attitude and an argument. They are not interested in understanding what the problem is and are certainly not interested in doing anything about it. STAY AWAY.
