British Nationals Online Consular Registration
A note from the British Consul in Lagos...

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has set up be a new and improved online registration service called LOCATE. The service will allow British nationals travelling or living overseas to register themselves with the FCO.

If you are a British national who either is resident or visiting Nigeria, Benin or Equatorial Guinea, whether for business or pleasure, you should register your details online. The registration details will be held on LOCATE, a secure password protected system.

When registering you will be asked for the duration your stay. You will be given two options to complete. Visits of (a) less than 90 days or (b) more than 90 days. It should be noted that details of your visit or residence will not remain on the system after the leaving date that you enter – ie if you register on the 1 st January 2008 for under 90 days, then your details will be deactivated on the 1 st April 2008. LOCATE will only accept details of travel for up to one year ahead, this mean long-term residents will need to register every year.

In order to use LOCATE, you will need to register, but you will only need to register once. The registration is process is simple. Visit the FCO’s website at www.fco.gov.uk and click on Travel Advice” (this can be found in the Services section on the top left-hand side). When in the Travel Advice section, click “Travel Advice by Country”.At the bottom of the Travel Advice by Country page you will see the following icon. Click on the “Consular Registration Form” icon and follow the online instructions. An e-mail confirmation will follow.

Please note that an existing subscription to the FCO's Online Services will not allow you to access LOCATE.

All registration details held by the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos have been migrated to LOCATE, but I would encourage all British nationals to re-register using the new system.

We are confident that this new service will improve our ability to provide Consular assistance in crisis situations.

Regards

David Harries
