Gunmen kill prison officer in central north

The police in central north Nigeria’s Kogi state said on Wednesday that unknown gunmen had killed a senior official of the Nigeria Prison Service in the state.

State police spokesperson Ajayi Okasanmi told reporters in Lokoja, the state capital that the official was on Tuesday shot dead in by persons suspected to be robbers.

He said investigation into the incident had begun although no arrest had been made.

An eyewitness said the late official was accosted by his assailants a few minutes after he withdrew money from a bank located at Ibrahim Babangida road.

The late prison inspector was trailed from the bank and engaged in a scuffle during which one of the suspects brought out a pistol and shot the prison official at close range.

According to the eyewitness, the suspect thereafter jumped on a waiting motorcycle and began shooting sporadically into the air.

He was said to have been driven away by the motorcyclist, suspected to be an accomplice.

The victim was later rushed to the nearby Federal Medical Center where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
