Bank set ablaze as policeman kills pregnant woman
It was a bloody morning in Abuja yesterday when a policeman attached to a new generation bank in the Mpape area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) shot dead an expectant woman sitting beside a taxi-cab driver.
The policeman was said to have targeted the driver, who was reportedly turning in front of the bank, a move considered to be an offence. In fact, making a u-turn in front of the bank has been banned with a bold warning inscription to that effect.
Angry residents, cab drivers and villagers were said to have pursued the policeman who ran inside the bank.
When they could not lay their hands on him, the residents burnt down the bank and about 18 cars in the parking lot.
Several bank officials were injured. They were rushed to a nearby hospital.
The FCT Police Commissioner, John Haruna, told reporters that the policeman would be investigated and prosecuted.
He said the gunshot was what attracted the people to the scene. They forced their way into the bank while the workers escaped through the window, Haruna said.
